{"id":428,"date":"2011-02-06T11:17:00","date_gmt":"2011-02-06T11:17:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/baulkolites.com\/wp\/?p=428"},"modified":"2011-02-06T11:17:00","modified_gmt":"2011-02-06T11:17:00","slug":"8-channel-rgb-led-strip-controller","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/mynoellights.com\/blog\/?p=428","title":{"rendered":"8 Channel RGB LED Flexible Strip Controller"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My leaping arches were a disaster this year. originally constructed by cutting 36&#8243; lengths of white rope light that was bent back on itself, to form a 18 section, about 8 of the 32 sections failed to turn on!\u00a0 So stuff them They were left turned OFF! &amp;*%#$@)*%^Y<\/p>\n<p>Now the season is over, I have had to time to rethink what I would like to do with the leaping arched.\u00a0 I like the efficiency of LEDs, so an Olde School version using 100 LED strings with 3 or 4 colours would be a good option.\u00a0 However, I am yet sorted out a decent supply of LED Strings and a conservative cost would be $10 x 3 x 8 x 4 = $960 for the four arches.\u00a0 That is too <em>&#8220;ouch&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>So to begin with I will settle with some sections of RGB strips like these. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aliexpress.com\/fm-store\/701799\/209843764-361563493\/5m-5050-RGB-waterproof-led-flexible-strip-IP65-with-controller-44key-IR-and-power-adaptor.html\">Sample LED Strip.<\/a> Depending on the strip model, flexible LED strips are available in 12V or 24v versions, with the 24v version being preferred as the current draw is lower.<\/p>\n<p>Either way I am going to need an 8 channel RGB controller small enough to be added to the base of the leaping arches and light enough to be actually mounted on the arch.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/baulkolites.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/uController.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-432 alignright\" title=\"uController\" src=\"http:\/\/baulkolites.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/uController-300x192.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"397\" height=\"254\" \/><\/a>The heart of the new Controller is a small AVR, ATTiny2313.\u00a0 This little AVR is packed with a stack of I\/O modules, including a USART capable of receiving DMX.\u00a0 The DMX is received by a RS485 transceiver and connected directly to the USART RX port.<\/p>\n<p>I have been using Ceramic Resonators for a while now on DMX controllers.\u00a0 Whilst their probably are not in specification over all temperature ranges, they have worked well to date.\u00a0 The main advantage of the Ceramic Resonators is cost and the need not to use external capacitors.<\/p>\n<p>This controller will use a 3 wire SPI interface to controller the 24 output channels.\u00a0 The Tiny2313 implements the SPI bus in a non standard manner and will required attention in terms of software. We will return the Output cct shortly.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/baulkolites.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/2574SMPS.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-430\" title=\"2574SMPS\" src=\"http:\/\/baulkolites.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/2574SMPS-300x131.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"131\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The power supply requirement +12 to 36 volts and should be as efficient as possible. A member over on <a href=\"http:\/\/Doityourselfchristmas.com\">DIYC.com<\/a>, RPM, recommended I check out the LM2574 Smart Switcher form Nat Semi,.\u00a0 RPM uses the same device on his <a href=\"http:\/\/shop.martinxmas.com\/product.php?id_product=20\">16channel DC Dimmer<\/a>.\u00a0 The cct is pretty basic, and National provides tables and graphs to select the switching components.\u00a0 The SMPS will provide power only to the micro-controller and association logic circuits.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/baulkolites.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/2x-595-FET-OP.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-429\" title=\"2x 595 FET OP\" src=\"http:\/\/baulkolites.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/2x-595-FET-OP-300x247.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"247\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The final section of the circuit is the output drive. I had already  decided I wanted to use FETs due to their very low On resistance.\u00a0 This  in turn means the dimmer power consumption is minimised.\u00a0 To drive the  FETs I use serial in, Parallel out Shift Register 74HC595.\u00a0 This was also borrowed from RPM on DIYC.com.\u00a0 There are 3x HC595, configured as a huge 24 bit serial in &#8211; parallel out shift register. (Note I have only shown 2 sections to conserve space, full schematics will be available below in the very near future.)\u00a0 The FETs are pretty standard, IRLL014 by International Rectifier.\u00a0 I choose this one for the following reasons:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>HEXFET<\/li>\n<li>UltraLow R(on)<\/li>\n<li>Vdss = 55v<\/li>\n<li>Id = 2A<\/li>\n<li>Pretty low cost @ AU0.34 each<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The artwork is shown below.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/baulkolites.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/8ChRGB-PCB-RevB.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-442\" title=\"8ChRGB PCB RevB\" src=\"http:\/\/baulkolites.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/8ChRGB-PCB-RevB-293x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"293\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After a discussion on DIYC.com, the suggestion was made to add the possibility of using a 78L05 linear Regulator and\u00a0 not fitting the LM2574 Simple Switcher.\u00a0 While the 78L05 addition is not shown above, it was included in the final design that went to the PCB Fab.<\/p>\n<p>I am not too sure if I should say the above artwork is &#8220;very pleasing&#8221;
